How does a horse help you get through recovery? For many addicts, using the power of animals, especially the graceful gentleness found in many horses, may be just what you need to help you connect with a part of you that has been lost or consumed by alcohol or another addiction.

How does a horse help you build your dreams? Does a horse know when your dreams are from your heart and not from your head? Ask anyone who has spent time loving on a horse and they will tell you that they go to the barn whenever life gets overwhelming or challenging. But what if you went to the barn to talk with the horses about your dreams and aspirations?

How does a horse help you get through recovery? For many addicts, using the power of animals, especially the graceful gentleness found in many horses, may be just what you need to help you connect with a part of you that has been lost or consumed by alcohol or another addiction. I was lost at first when I had to live without my best friend, Vodka. Today horses help me figure out how to follow my heart. My coach helps me stay focused. With a horse and a coach by my side, I am manifesting my dreams.

In my first few months of sobriety, I didn’t know what was up or what was down. I’d be happy one day and depressed the next. I’ve heard others say that life is like a rollercoaster. You jump in and start climbing that first big hill, feel the excitement of going down, then climb back up another, moving just a tad faster. There’s then the rush of going straight down again until you just coast in, get off, walk to the end of the line, and wait for the next ride.

That describes life for many people. The difference for me as a recovering alcoholic is that I had never climbed the hills before to experience the thrill of going down. I jumped straight to the thrill with my friend, Vodka. It was a shallow thrill. In recovery I work hard to attain a goal and I don’t quit when it becomes difficult. I stick to it and make it to the top, which makes it all the more exciting to go down the hill. I earned the right to thoroughly enjoy the ride.

The horses can help you work through your thoughts and help you figure out what’s in your heart and what you’re passionate about. When you start exploring your options, the horses may stand with you and give you support; or they may possibly take a nap. I know by watching them when an idea is coming from your heart. Our work as humans is to listen to the horses, listen to our hearts, and start building our dreams.

I believe that if you have a dream or a passion to look forward to in your life, you will have purpose, which will give you new direction on your journey. If you make every day a grateful day, a day that you do something that supports your dream, you will move forward in your life. Moving forward gives me joy and joy is what the horses want us to live in. They will show you in so many ways what you need to do to find your passion, to go to your heart.  I’m going out to the barn now to discuss my future with them. I wonder what they will have to say today.
